My Name Is Khan :: My Review

Karan Johar who usually deals with family emotions has shifted gears and made a serious film. The first half of the movie is well made with really heart touching moments, where as second half of the movie tests your patience at times.

It is always a sensation when Karan announces a film with SRK, if the title borrows the lead actors name it is an another point that adds to the sensation, if the hit pair teams up again then def. it will be an added hype to the film. The same happened to MNIK. My Name is Khan re unites SRK-Kajol-Karan.

SRK-Kajol who are always defined as the perfect couple on the screen draws main attraction to the movie. After Newyork (i am only mentioning this name as this is the only movie i have seen with the similar kind of plot), MNIK also deals with the post 9/11 effects that NRI's have faced in US.

The film wouldn't have been better if the lead actor is normal, with the Aspergers Syndrome the lead could eventually draw curiosity, innocence and sympathy to Rizwan Khan's Character. SRK is superb and def one of his fine performances till date. Though the basic plot has been borrowed from few Hollywood movies and Dustin Hoffman's character in Rain Man, SRK has truly done a splendid job in MNIK.

The story is pretty simple, problems faced by the NRI's post 9/11. Def. this is a sensitive issue and has become one of the major subjects for Bollywood. Rizwan Khan (SRK) suffers from Asperger's syndrome in which he doesn't like Social interaction, he has a phobia for new places, new persons, he hates yellow color. His mom bought him up so well and she couldn't even leave him. Rizwan has a brother played by Jimmy Shergill who doesn't like the attention Rizwan gets from his mother. He settles in US, also marries a girl there. After the death of their mother Jimmy calls his brother to US.

Mandira is a single, independent woman who works in a saloon. SRK loves her and proposer her to marry him. Mandira gets convinced and marries SRK. Sameer is the son of Mandira who receives Rizwan well. 9/11 terror happens and brings an enormous changes in the life style of US NRI's which also effects Rizwan-Mandira-Sameer. The rest of the story is how Rizwan fights back to get his identity as a Non-Terrorist. He wants to meet the President of US to simply say "My Name Is Khan and I am not a Terrorist".

It really sucks when US govt officials check the innocent, ordinary people just because their name has a tag Khan, Mohammad etc;

The first half of the film was made exceptionally well that every one who is watching the movie gets into the mood, after rizwan begins his journey to meet the president the film gradually looses its grip and fells flat towards the end.

Karan who is known for his lengthy drama movies has really made an honest and sincere film, he should have chosen much more effective way in the second half.

SRK is perfect and his role as an aspergers disorder patient def helped him to extract a fine performance.

Kajol, the drama queen of Bollywood is exceptional. She did the role with immense ease.

Zarina Wahab, who played the role of SRK's mother, Parvin Dabas, the child who acted as Sameer played really well. Remaining others were okay.

Few scenes like SRK donating 500 to the charity and scenes between SRK-Kajol were exceptionally well made.

On the whole first half of the movie is well made with really heart touching moments, where as second half of the movie tests your patience at times. The second half and the climax should have taken care of. Karan made a sincere attempt with MNIK and the movie is a must watch for Movie Buffs, and SRK fans would def. go excited.

My Review: 3/5
